In our latest edition of the Impulse series Dr. Raúl González Muñoz, lecturer at the University of Leicester and Associate Fellow of the AIA NRW, highlights the critical role of collaboration and innovation in Europe’s space strategy. From near-Earth orbits to cislunar exploration, space requires a close partnership between policymakers and industry to overcome significant financial and technological barriers.
Dr. González Muñoz also sees space as a catalyst for European unity. Collaborative efforts through ESA and EUSPA have proven that pooling resources strengthens Europe’s geopolitical and industrial standing. To remain competitive with nations like the U.S. and China, Europe must increase investment, reform decision-making processes, and harmonise legislation with a unified EU space law.
The ultimate goal, he argues, is European autonomy in space—ensuring independent access and operations. Reflecting on Europe’s resilience, he quotes Jean Monnet: “Europe will be forged in crises and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises.”
To secure its place in the final frontier, Europe must prioritise innovation, integration, and sovereignty, making space a cornerstone of its future strategy.
